Gandhi Returns (self-portrait)

2013
Fibre-tips, coloured pencil and synthetic polymer paint on cotton paper
96.5 × 127 cm (38 × 50 in)

A globally famous Indian cultural icon, Mahatma Gandhi was integral to the movement for Indian independence from the British through non-violent resistance, yet expressed anti-black racism in South Africa and sexual behaviour towards young women. Returned from beyond as a salivating zombie, I am Gandhi as a literally imperfect figure. The undead hero warns against fixations on hierarchies of leadership and alludes to idolisation as being dehumanising to those witnessed as leaders, making one-dimensional icons erased of complexities.
