Today, drove from the airport through 30 minutes of sugar cane fields to Murwillumbah on Bundjalung country. Tomorrow @tweedregionalgallery I’ll be running a self portrait movie poster workshop in conjunction with my survey show Between You and Me. “Imagine yourself as the main character in an apocalyptic action movie, fighting oppressive forces for a better future. Cast yourself as a force for change, triumphant over racism, patriarchy, environmental destruction and other social evils. TextaQueen will guide you in designing your own self portrait movie poster.” Image: Lorena ‘Cowboy’ Solin “Our Blood Boils”.

When the smoke clears and the dust settles a lone figure looks onto a restless crowd. With a tip of her hat to the heroes of yesteryear gunned down in the smoke and fire of history. With a nod to the people of the Philippines’ 1986 uprising and the blood spilled. She looks into the crowd and feels the heat of pent up anger. She’s not a hero. Centuries of colonialism, agitation, insurrection, struggle, contributing to the boiling point of now. She’s not a hero but she’s cut like a cowboy, with her butch spurs and the gleam of vengeance in her eye. She is ready to ride the revolution. She’s not a hero but she knows… your rage, your pain, your anger, your love. She knows that… Our Blood Boils

Lorena’s namesake is her mother’s close friend, Ma. Lorena Barros founder of Malayang Kilusan ng Bagong Kababaihan (Free Movement of New Women) or MAKIBAKA, a militant women’s organization in the Phillipines who died in a military ambush at 28 years old. #textaqueen #lorenabarros #movieposterportrait #apocalypse (at Murwillumbah, New South Wales)
