HOUSEBOUND reveals to us aspects of home-dwelling that are equally as mysterious as they are mundane. Surrounded by refurbished retro furnishings, the space lulls our “house guests” into a false sense of domestic comfort. Meanwhile, the surrounding walls confront us with self-contained bodies, that subversively and voyeuristically transgress the illusion of familiarity. Spanning various mediums and forms of storytelling, each featured artist deals with personal identity, sexuality, banal eroticism and conceptions of exoticism.

TEXTAQUEEN hails originally from Australia, yet currently lives and works in The Bay Area, California. Using the humble medium of fibre-tip markers to articulate a complex politics of race, gender, sexuality and identity; Texta uses the image of the self as a conduit to question notions of “the exotic.” Texta has exhibited widely and wildly across Australia, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; Perth Institute of Contemporary Art; Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne; Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne; and the Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane. Texta has also exhibited in Amsterdam, Belgium and across North America, including a recent mural commission for Taking it to the Streets at de Young Museum, San Francisco. Texta’s work is held in numerous collections including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Heide Museum of Modern Art; National Gallery of Victoria; National Portrait Gallery of Australia; University of Queensland; Monash University of Modern Art; Cruthers Collection of Womens Art; Artbank as well as private collections across Australia, the UK and USA. Texta is represented by Sullivan & Strumpf, Sydney.

BONNIE LANE is an Australian born, New York based artist and is a current MFA candidate at New York University. Her practice spans moving image, performance, photography, poetry, installation, sculpture and collage; each medium used as a means to objectify the male figure from a female heterosexual perspective (or, rather, the “female gaze”) with an aim to debunk prescribed gender roles. The recipient of many grants, awards and scholarships, Bonnie has participated in artist-in-residence programs in Norway, Portugal, South Korea and the USA. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including solo exhibitions at Anna Pappas Gallery, Melbourne and the Art Currents Institute, New York. She has also exhibited work in the Seoul Museum of Art Nanji Gallery; Art-Athina, Athens; Atelier 35, Bucharest, Romania; 91mq Project Space, Berlin; YouYou Gallery, Guangzhou, China and Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center, New York, among others.
