Some photos from last week of a few of the students from St Joseph’s Flexible Learning Centre with their works up @artshouse. We wandered down from the school (where there are two more works in the windows above the courtyard), and witnessing their reactions to their work up, up and enormous in the windows swelled my emotions. Tears, guffaws, and student initiated hugs – I’m very blessed. I feel safe to express that the experience of working with these students, who seemed to really engage with the project, has been mutually empowering and uplifting for the students and I, in all the ways that should be in superhero narratives. Thanks to all the students (the big group shot in our superhero poses will remain private for their privacy); to Bibi, Omar and Awad in these pics (posted with consent) and their collaborators not pictured, including Reza, Lual & Freya; Justin, Mairead and the other teachers at St Joseph’s; @artshouse, @naomivelaphi and @taratrax for running the project and my friends who posed for the figures the students transformed. I love running workshops at schools like St Joseph’s and wish such places could be channeled more resources and funding (esp without heavy bureaucracy on them) to have ‘marginalised’ students access more creative activities and projects. Up, Art and Away is up until early January 521 Queensberry St, North Melbourne / Narrm #upartandaway #stjosephs #artshouse #textaqueen #artsuperheroes #awkwardartistsconnect (at Arts House)
